I observed a lot of things in the chapter I observed. I
think for the most part there were major themes in Jon Snows chapter. To begin
with Snow seems to be moving away from the outsider role that he had been in
and taking one that is far more like a leadership role. When he speaks people
listen. This is the idea in multiple instances. The first is when Sam is being
attacked for the first time and Jon stops it, the weapons master says that
“Lord Snow speaks and the peasants listen”. This is the amount of power that
Snow has where he can command his brothers to stop despite the orders of a
superior. Also to keep Sam from being hurt too badly he instructs them all as
to how they will act around him, even going to the length of a threat when one
of his brothers ignores his orders. It is this leadership that is mentioned
constantly and Jon is that leader. The idea of brotherhood is an important
constant throughout this section, because despite having his half brothers at
home Snow takes an interest and conforms to the life of his new brothers. They
begin to act in a uniform fashion and therefore are better off than where they
had been before. The last word I picked out was the word Craven, it is
basically another way of saying coward. This binary device of bravery vs.
cowardice is at play throughout the section. At two different ends, Jon is what
we consider brave, he is well spoken, good at combat, and at the wall of his
own free will. Sam is a polar opposite in that he is uninterested in
swordsmanship, has interests in music, and gets sick at the sight of blood. Jon
and Sam are very different and yet they both have their moments where they show
sides opposite of their natures.
