The image of Bran lying sick is one the Martin likes to
focus on throughout the chapter when Catelyn is crazy from worry. His
repetition of this idea really drives readers to understand just how helpless
and fragile his life is at this moment. It also shows how much grief Catelyn
finds herself in with her son lying on a sickbed, it has driven her mad and she
is unable to even think straight; she can only think of Bran recovering. She
has been up for days with Bran being the only thing on her mind and this is why
when the attacker comes on she is able to somehow fend him off for a while. It
shows the strength a mother has when something comes between her and her child,
she has no limits and no fears when it comes to protecting Bran. Then the
direwolf comes in. Martin has also been bringing up the wolves and how much
noise they have been making throughout the chapter. It drives Catelyn wild with
all of their howling and she wants to be rid of them, she does not care for
them at all. But once Bran’s wolf comes in to save his life as well as Catelyn,
it is evident that her disgust has turned to gratitude. Had it not been for the
wolf Bran, along with herself, most likely would have been murdered. The
direwolves play a huge role throughout the book and just like Jon said, they
were meant to have them.
