Summary:
In the prologue two characters are killed by the “others”, Will and Royce. Jon Snow then finds “direwolf” puppies which are distributed to all of Eddard’s kids, while Jon kept the albino puppy for himself. We then learn that the Northerners still worship the old gods, and the southerners (including Catelyn) worship the seven gods. We learn that Ned’s friend Jon Arryn is dead, and that King Robert and his family are on their way to the castle (also called winterfell?). In the chapter told my Daenerys, we are told that Prince Viserys is planning on selling his sister (Daenerys) to Lord Khal Drogo in hopes to receive an army in return. Viserys hopes are to win back the seven kingdoms? In this chapter there is also some abuse between Daenerys and his brother Viserys. In the chapter of Eddard, Robert has arrived with his whole family (and many others?). We learned Robert was once in love with Ned’s deceased sister. In this chapter is where we also learn that Robert has officially offered Ned Jon Arryn’s position as being “hand of the king”. At the feast, Jon Snow (Ned’s son) shows his interest in being in the Nights Watch to his Uncle Ben but Ben quickly shuts him down and Jon becomes very upset and runs off. In the second chapter told my Catelyn, she receives a letter from Lysa (Jon Arryn’s widow) stating that The Lannisters murdered Jon. This causes Ned to go and be Robert’s Hand. Catelyn and Ned discuss which children should go with Ned and which children should stay behind, and in the end the make the decision that it is in best interest for everyone if Jon Snow go be in the Night’s Watch. In Arya’s chapter, we learn that she views Sansa as the pretty daughter that gets everything, as she has many skills and talents. We also are told that Joffery is somewhat of a trouble maker.

Questions:
What is the difference between the different kingdoms?
What exactly goes on in the “rangings”?
Who are the Lannisters?
What is the deal with Theon? Why is he a hostage?
