The book opens up to a scene where Gared, Ser
Waymar Royce, and Will are on the other side of the wall trying to protect it. The
get attacked and the Others kill Ser Waymar Royce and Will. Gared is stuck in a
tree watching the whole thing. Then we go to the next chapter where Stark is
going to execute someone who survived the attack from the Others. After that
happens they see a dead direwolf and her pups in the snow and each of Ned’s
children get their own wolf. The king later finds out that his longtime friend
Jon is dead and that King Robert is coming to visit. King Robert and his family
come and on his behalf he asks Ned to become his hand of the king. Ned is very
iffy about this because he doesn’t know exactly what to do leave his family or
protect them. Also, King Robert asks Ned if his son can marry his daughter. Then
we learn from a secret note sent to Cateyln that the Lannisters poisoned Jon and
that he died from that. Catelyn hates Ned’s bastard son Jon Snow and wants him
gone but the advisor tells Ned and Catelyn that he should go into the Night’s
Watch. And that Ned will go South with King Robert and fight there and figure out
what really happened to Jon. Also, it is found out that the Stark daughters
will go with Ned and go south. Ned and Catelyn have two daughters named Arya
and Sansa. Arya is more of a tom boy and doesn’t want to do girly things or
sew. Lastly, we find out that no one really likes Joffery because he thinks he
is better than everyone else.
Questions:
- What is the Wall exactly?
- Who are the Others and Lannisters?
- What is so great about the South and not the North?
- Who are all these people?
