1-75 summary

Declan Konroyd

Chapter one starts out with Bran accompanying his father Eddard during a execution of a deserter. Bran doesn’t know why the man is being killed but assumes he is a Wilding. It is Brans first view of a public beheading. This scene was gruesome for Bran because he is a young child at the time. Theon compliments Bran for his stoic emotions during the execution. This scene seemed to show Brans loss of innocence at a young age.  The loss of innocence is not a bad thing though. The men purposefully had Bran witness the execution in order to make bran mentally stronger.  In this world the faint hearted are unsafe.
After the execution, the group spots a dead direwolf mother with 6 dead pups. Bran begs his father to let them keep the pups. Eddard decides the pups will fit well with the family as long as they feed and raise the pups themselves. Jon spots the white wolf and chooses it for himself.
Catelyn Stark tries to find Eddard in the godswood after his return to Winterfell. She find him polishing his sword Ice. Ned tells Catelyn that the man they executed was half insane. Something was bothering him too much to make apparent. Chapter two ends with the families’ friends coming to see them.
In chapter 4 the king’s army comes to Winterfell.  Ned sees old friends and observes great changes to his comrade King Robert. Robert and Ned converse about the differences in quality of life from the North to the South. Ned and Robert visit the crypt to give honor to the fallen.  As Ned and Robert converse over the troubles of the land, I noticed an interesting quote by Ned. He says that it is “so cold in the North that a man’s laughter freezes in his throat and chokes him to death”. Winter is also coming.
Winterfell holds a feast in honor of Robert’s travels. Jon is observed sitting with the younger squires instead of the royal family. Jon feeds Ghost under the dinner table. Benjen asks Jon why he isn’t eating with the king. Jon replies that Catelyn thought seating a bastard with the king might be provoking. During this scene Jon is repetitively referred to as a bastard. This leads to Jon’s thoughts of himself as he observes the world around him.
In chapter 6 Catelyn receives a message from her sister Lysa. The message said that the Queen executed Jon Arryn. She explains that Ned must be the King’s Hand now. Ned thinks about it and decides he will do it.  Ned also decides that Bran should come to accompany Robb and Joffrey. Maester Luwin mentions Jon’s goals to join the Night’s watch. Ned also considers Jon “Taking the black”.
