I
think that Martin chooses to repeat “fly” and “fall” because those two words
encompass Bran’s entire “dream” that he is in and is going through while he is
asleep. I think that if Bran chooses not to try and fly and falls then he
chooses death and in turn, he chooses to stay asleep and not wake up. If Bran
chooses to fly, which he did in the book, then he chooses life and as we saw at
the end of his POV chapter, he wakes up. It is sort of like a sequence in which
flying or falling comes first. If he chooses to use the “wings” that the three
eyed crow tells him to use then he will live. Which brings us to step 2:
choosing life or death. If he chooses life then he will wake up and if he doesn’t
use his “wings” then he chooses death and will stay asleep.
Martin
throughout Bran’s POV chapter also used the word “ground” a lot. I think he did
this as a constant reminder that Bran was falling and if he didn’t try and fly,
if he didn’t truly want to live then he would hit the ground and die. The use
of repetition was very useful in this POV chapter. It made Bran’s life seem
like something he, himself could choose.
