Game of Thrones pgs.1-75

The book starts off with three guys who are out searching the woods past their castle looking for a group of people who are supposedly out there.  The two guys end up getting killed by the group of people while the other guy, Gared, is taken with the group.  You don’t actually know this until the next chapter.  In the next chapter, we were introduced to the Starks.  This chapter was from Bran’s point of view.  In this chapter we are introduced to some of the Starks.  This group of people were on their way to a beheading.  This was Bran’s first time seeing a beheading, and he joined his other brothers and people from their kingdom in watching Ned, Brans dad, behead a man (Gared).  On their way back from the beheading they found a dead rare wolf called a “direwolf.”  The mother direwolf was dead but she had 6 babies laying around her.  Jon, who is Ned’s bastard child, convinces him to let all the kids have a wolf to take care of and train on their own.  The next chapter was in the view of Catelyn, Ned’s wife.  This chapter is important because you find out Jon Arynn, who is Catelyns brother and law and the hand of the king, is dead.  Also, King Lannister is planning to visit the Starks along with the Queen and the Lannisters.  Ned felt they were coming with such short notice, but nevertheless welcomed them.  The next chapter was the Daenerys chapter.  In this chapter we were introduced to a guy named Viserys and his sister Daenerys or “Dany” for short.  The main part of this chapter is that Viserys is trying to sell his sister and marry her off to another lord/king and in trade Viserys will be provided with an army from the lord. The next chapter is Eddard and this is when the King and his family show up to Winterfell to visit.  They are also grieving the loss of the hand of the king but while here the king offers Eddard to be the new hand of the king.  Eddard explains that he is unsure but he has to discuss it with Catelyn, his wife, first, then he will get back to him.  The king also offers his son to marry Ned’s daughter.  The following chapter is Jon.  This chapter is from Jon’s point of view at the feast and since he is the bastard child he isn’t allowed to sit with the royal family.  He sits at another table drinking wine along with the company of his direwolf.  Jon’s gets upset at the dinner and runs off into the night.  He begins talking to a guy outside and gets the idea that he would like to join the night watch which is known to be a dangerous job.  The next chapter is from Catelyns point of view.  In this chapter Catelyn receives a letter from her sister which is written in code that only they know.  She deciphers it and finds out that her brother in law was murdered.  Ned talks to Catelyn and they decide that it is okay for him to go be the hand of the king, and they also approve of Jon being in the night watch.  Catelyn doesn’t want to take care of Jon because he’s not her real child and since he is a bastard it also is not good for him to go south with Ned.  In the following chapter titled “Arya,” we are introduced to the two daughters of Ned, Arya and Sansa.  Sansa is more of a “lady” while we learn that Arya is a tomboy. She runs away from her sewing duties and goes to the courtyard to watch the boys’ sword fight.  This is where we see the Kings son who he offered to marry Ned’s daughter and learn that he is pretty arrogant and not a great guy.

-The last discussion between the King and Ned was confusing, on pages 112-117. What exactly were they talking about with the war and Jaime Lannister?

-Who are the Others and Lannisters?

-Could you explain the 7 kingdoms, or what exactly they are?
