Game of thrones summary. Pages 1-75.

The story is set in a land called Westeros.  The first chapters are set more specially in Winterfell, which is the biggest city in the North.  The North is ruled by the Starks, who make up the majority of the main characters thus far in the book.  Eddard (Ned) Stark is married to Caetlyn and they have five children; Robb, Bran, Rickon, Arya, Sansa, and then Ned has a bastard named Jon Snow.  Ned is a very wise and humble man, we see that very on in the book when he talks to Bran about why he killed the deserter and why.  Early in the book, five (later six) dire wolves are found.  One for each child of the Stark family.  The King of the Seven Kingdoms, Robert Baratheon, comes to visit Winterfell from the capital King's Landing in order to appoint Ned to the position of the King's Hand.  The position opened up after Jon Arryn died a very weeks prior to the trip.  We later find out that Lysa Arryn, Jon's wife and Caetlyn's sister, believes that Jon was actually murdered by the Lannisters- a rich and powerful family from Casterly Rock.  The reason that the King chooses Ned is because they're best friends and pals from the civil war where Robert defeated the Targaryens, the previous rulers of Westeros.  Other characters that we get a glimpse of in so far are Danaerys, Viserys, Tyrion, Joffrey.  Tyrion is a dwarf who appears very wise due to the harsh life he has had due to his ailment.
I'll be honest, I've actually read the book before so I don't have any questions over the plot.  But my general reaction is the same as the first time I read it.  The characters from the North, the Starks, are clearly the favorites.  They are nice and humble where the characters from the South are rude, mean, and arrogant.  That's especially obvious we when compare and contrast Robb and Jon to Joffrey.  Martin clearly wants us to take sides in the upcoming battles and fights thats to come.
