Homework 2/20
I choose Ned's chapter on page 153 when Ned and King Robert are trying to fix this little fight between Prince Joffery and Ayra. The binary used in this chapter is the two names of the houses Stark and Lannister. Martin uses these terms as binaries because the represent two different houses and their different view on things. The Stark's are more honorable and do things the humane way by talking things out and trying to fix the problem. While the Lannisters are sinister people and do bad things like having affair and killing people just for power and greed. Martin also uses the wolf and the dog as binaries to show the same comparison between the two houses. The direwolf represents something that is dangerous but also can protect you. Everyone thinks that the direwolves are some sort of nasty creature. The dog on the other hand is just something little and won;t do much harm. I think Martin is getting at something to show that the Stark family can be dangerous in war and that something big will happen soon while the Lannisters are like a dog and can only do so much. The word direwolf is repeated many times in this chapter. I think it is repeated so much because as we know they protect their owners and since winter is coming, I think they will protect what is theirs and help the Starks out. Also we know that the direwolves are very important in this book and soon we will see what everyone thinks of them.
