Game
of Thrones Analysis V
In
this week’s Game of Thrones summary, pages 431 to 522 are examined. My
heart is broken and I could probably cry. Robert dies, Ned quite possibly “dies”.
Jon is sworn into The Night’s Watch as a steward, not a ranger. Perhaps the
only act of consolation was Khal Drogo brutally executing Viserys after all the
insolence and utter abuse he had put on Dany. George Martin did a fantastic job
of pulling at my heartstrings and then rips them out after he swore everything would
be okay. However, I’d rather feel pain than nothing at all.
Robert
had been out on a hunting trip while tension brewed in King’s Landing. Ned held
court to villagers of the Kingdom who had fallen victim to a heavily armed pack
of brigands who razed their homes and killed their inhabitants. It was almost
certain they were Lannister men, however their armor was unmarked and made Ned uneasy.
It was almost positive the head of the brigand was Gregor Clegane and so to
seek justice for the people, Ned sends a force to execute Gregor. This move
sent away many knights loyal to Ned Stark. Meanwhile, Ned has had enough and
summons Cersei to meet him in the godswood. There, he confirms with Cersei’s
own affirmation that Cersei’s three sons were fathered by Jaime Lannister. This
would make Joffrey ineligible to heir Robert’s throne. Cersei tries to seduce him, meeting over.
Robert returns from a hunting trip mortally wounded by a boar. Ned authors
Robert’s will leaving him as Protector of the Kingdoms until his son (Robert’s) is old enough to
reign. Ned knows all hell is about to break loose and so he calls on
Littlefinger to round up faithful soldiers willing to fight against any
Lannister opposition to the proclamation Robert had left. In the throne room,
Robert quarrels with Cersei and is double crossed by Littlefinger’s own hand.
We are left with the cliffhanger of Littlefinger’s dagger pressed up to Ned’s
throat.
Questions/Thoughts:
1. ANYBODY
but Ned!!! He is just such an honorable, admirable character…caught up in a
game of thrones.
2. Moments
before Viserys was killed by Drogo, Viserys had his sword pressed up to Dany’s pregnant
body. He threatens to “cut the bastard out” and in the next paragraph, Dany’s
servant is crying, begging not to translate to Drogo what Viserys is saying,
afraid Drogo will kill her. Does this mean that Dany is carrying a child that
isn’t Khal Drogo’s? Very confusing sentence setup and this is definitely
shocking, if so.
