The reading begins with Tyrion and Catelyn at The Vale. Tyrion calls for a trial by combat and a sellsword named Bronn fights for him and wins. Tyrion took a big gamble trusting that Bronn or another sellsword would take his place, but considering that a regular trial would have certainly meant death for him, he took the risk and was rewarded. In her chapters Dany had to adjust once again to the culture of the Dothraki. She was forced to eat the heart of a horse in order to see how strong her and her child was. Since she ate the whole heart and didn't vomit, although she came close, her baby will be a very strong ruler. Also in her chapter, Viserys gets angry and draws his sword as a threat to the Dothraki. But in the city there is a rule that no one can draw a sword, anyone who does must be put to death. So the Dothraki pour melted gold over Viserys and he is burned to death. Considering that her only sibling and companion through most of her life suddenly died, Dany was quite composed. Becoming Khaleesi has changed her and has made her a much more independent and strong woman. At The Wall, Jon, Sam, and the rest of the recruits get inducted into the Night's Watch becoming full-fledged members. He doesn't become a ranger like he wanted to but once he realizes that he was chosen because Mormont and the higher ups are trying to groom him for command, he becomes much happier with his place on the wall. In King's Landing a lot happens plot wise. Ned finally finds out what Jon Arryn was tracking down. He realizes that the King's children are not in fact his children. They are kids of the incest between Jaime and Cersei. Ned warns Cersei that he has discovered the truth and that she should leave King's Landing before his findings go public. This is happening while Robert goes hunting and suffers a seemingly mortal wound when try to oil a boar. He appoints Ned to regent until Joffrey becomes old enough to rule. This means that sometime soon in the book, Ned and Cersei, the Starks and Lanisters, will have a very large conflict to decide who will rule the kingdom.
