As the reading begins we find that King Robert Baratheon is
now dead. As you said in class this may have been because of the Lannisters. It
seems as though the Lannisters got Robert drunk when he was hunting to purposefully
cause a hunting accident. Cersie knew that she was not safe with Robert alive
because of what Ned knew so she took out her own husband. Ned has a letter that
Robert had him write, unfortunately it does not matter and Cersie rips it
apart. After the letter is ripped Peter Balish, otherwise known as
Littlefingers, turns on Ned. I could see this coming because Littlefingers
never liked Ned. I’m curious to know his motives though. Does Littlefingers
want Ned dead because he wants to be with Catlyn? I’m sure he knows that after
turning on Ned Catlyn will never talk to him again. I don’t see him as a true
Lannister follower so maybe he just thrives on chaos. Dany and Khal Drogo are
seriously getting ready to cross the sea and take the throne. The north gets
word that Ned has been captured and Robb is going to go to the south and start
a war. This seems to be the climax of the first book. Because it is a series
and a story that is ever-changing it is difficult to pinpoint the climax. However,
I believe the biggest part of the first book is when Littlefingers assist in
capturing Ned. Now Joeffry will be king which bugs me. He is far and away my
least favorite character and I know that he will make a terrible king. It is
frustrating to see a man like Ned go away into captivity when he should be king
and a boy like Joeffry become the new king. Now with the Lannisters in power it looks
as though Cersie will get away with everything. This seems to be a story that doesn’t
have to have a happy ending so I know that anything can happen.
