This reading starts with Tyrion and Catelyn at the Catelyn’s
sister’s land, the Vale. Tyrion’s man who volunteered to fight to the death for
him fights a knight that Catelyn’s sister appointed. Bronn wins and Tyrion is
set free with Bronn. This is going to be an interesting duo with Tyrion
bringing the brains and Bronn providing the brawn. John Snow and Sam get
inducted into the Nights Watch. John does not get the position that he wanted.
Snow wanted to be a ranger but instead is a servant. He is really mad about the
whole situation and cannot seem to catch a break. In the Dany chapter the
Dothraki kill Viserys by pouring hot liquid gold on his head. Arya and Sansa go
back to the north. Ned believes they will be safer there than in Kings Landing.
Sansa is obviously upset because she wants to be with Joeffry Arya also wants
to continue her sword fighting lessons at kings landing. Ned knows it is not
safe for them to be with him because of the knowledge he is collecting. Ned
finds out that the children do not belong to Robert Baratheon, rather they are
products of incest between Cersei and her brother Jamie. Ned tells Cersie and
implores her to leave Kings Landing. Now Ned is in much danger with the
Lannister family after him. Robert then conveniently gets hurt in a hunting
accident and is now on his deathbed. He hands the kingdom over to Ned until
Joeffry is old enough to be king. Ned however writes that Roberts brother
Stannis will become king. This section is really where it hits the fan. A lot
goes on and sets up for the conclusion of the book. At this point we know the
characters well enough and it’s all drama and action.
