In this section it’s apparent that Lady Lysa (Jon Arryns
wife) has a screw loose. Despite her incabablity to hold onto her reason as
demonstrated in last chapter she allows for Tyrion to find an escape route from
his imprisonment and then assists him in escaping through her actions in the
duel for his freedom. To begin with she allows one of her older knights, Ser
Varis, to fight on her behalf, the knight in question is lacking in the speed
that Bronn has by losing his armor. His armor also slows him down and tires him
quicker than Bronn. Another instance in which Lysa does all she can to assist
Tyrion and Bronn is by forcing her victor to fight using Jon Arryn’s sword,
which he is unfamiliar with and which would slow him down. They also show a
short insight into Catelyn’s past with Petyr Littlefinger. How he had lost his
duel and how it effected her years later. When Varis does fall (having followed
the commands of Lady Arryn) we see the extreme immaturity of Robert Arryn,
remembering how he is very frail and immature yelling that he wants to make
Tyrion fly despite the proof of innocence through the trial. At the end of the
chapter it says the high road is another kind of death sentence to take the
high road. I was highly disturbed by all of the actions of Robert Arryn during
the appearances he made during these sections and it worries me that he could
be in charge of the Vale. At the beginning we saw that King Robert didn’t want
to allow Robert Arryn to hold control of the Vale and I questioned why this was.
However, after seeing how he actually is, it is obvious that the Arryn’s
control of the Vale will come to an end. There is also the second Tyrion
chapter that causes foreshadowing of the end of the Arryn rule of the Vale. At
the end of the chapter he says, “I will give you the Vale of Arryn.” (Loc 7744).
This coupled with the Lannister words, “A Lannister always pays his debts,”
(Loc 7652) makes me believe that the Vale will eventually be taken by the
Lannisters.
