Responses to articles

When I first read the article about the 'good' and the 'bad' I thought it was interesting that the article highlighted not just the negatives but the positives as well. It showed that it was trying to give a well rounded, thought out argument. What I enjoyed most about this article and that I agreed with was how it is a big problem that violence and disturbing acts in movies are praised rather than looked down upon. Instead of being put in a bad light, it is the key to movies and television's success. It is interesting that when an actual mass killing happens in the United States a sickening feeling falls across the nation, even though a movie would show the same act and win an award for the drama, or make millions off of the movie. After reading the article I learned that the media tries to make it sound like video games have a direct link to the causing factors of these massacres. In reality there is a correlation between the two but has not been proven to be the reason, and in some cases the correlation is not strong. When evaluating these situations in must be taken from many view points rather than blaming one aspect when truthfully it is not one factor. I believe the article did make a good point saying that even though the risk for a correlation between violent video games and violent acts are smaller, the worry is in the kids who already have issues with violence; these are people that need special attention to help prevent these acts. All in all, I thought it was informative and gave good arguments for both sides to help raise awareness to help solve the issues. The second article I think argued that even if studies show a correlation, the correlation is small enough to not be the leading cause or enough to solely cause violent action. To me that seems the most important, realizing that just blaming video games is not going fix the problem. The media needs to shine the light on other problematic areas so a multistep solution can be used. The article mentioning the dark night, did give me perspective that what we find entertaining are actually sick events in real life. I didn't realize how true that what we find great in theaters are usually tragetic events that bring Americans to their knees.
